How Hollywood Killed Good Cinema

Kyle Toffelmire 9 October 2009 No Comment

For the last few years there has been a question burning in movie goers heads, Where have all the good movies gone? Remember the 90’s when good movies came out every month? Shawshank Redemption, Toy Story, The Lion King, Jurassic Park, Titanic, and The Nightmare Before Christmas, to name a few. No matter what way you look at it Hollywood has changed in the last ten years. All the movies named above were ORIGINAL stories that were told very well. Three of which had sequels made out of them. To most people, Toy Story 2 was probably the only one worth watching.

We still get original stories in movies right? To an extent yes. Movie sequels and remakes are dominating our theater slots. Why? Because the original did very well in the box office, and so should the remake or sequel. At least in theory. Hollywood has done nothing but milk franchises like Spiderman, Batman, Die Hard, and Rush Hour, and more to the point, to where most people (unless they’re a total fanboy) won’t even see the latest installment. The first thing out of most peoples mouths when they come out of a sequel or a remake is, That wasn’t as good as the original. Why? It was rushed to production to make a quick buck.

Why does Hollywood like sequels and remakes? Because they make money fast. How many times have you gone to see a sequel to something and felt ripped off? Probably more than once. If there isn’t anything on a producers desk that he thinks he can make money off of, first dibs go to a sequel with a high grossing predecessor. The reason? All those Hollywood fat cats have to protect there lifestyle right? I mean you wouldn’t want Angelina to have to move into a smaller mansion and only drive one car would you? Thus Hollywood pumps out crappy sequels and remakes to increase the size of their bankroll. Hollywood is using us, the consumers to pad their lifestyle.

The last question is simple. Where does it go from here?
